I did not walk into that room because I thought I had a problem. I sat at the back and somebody I had never met described my own week back to me, in my own sentences, and the floor went out. This is the piece where the word finally arrived.
I did not walk into that room because I thought I had a problem.
I want that on the record before anything else, because the version people expect is a person who knows, arriving to admit it. That was not me. I went in with a story about a bad run and something wrong with my luck, and I was going to sit in the back and be a person who was there for some reason other than myself.
I will not name the room. Rooms like that ask their members not to identify themselves as members in press, in film, in anything published, and I intend to keep to that for as long as I have anything to do with this company. It is not a technicality to me. It is the reason the room works. So I will call it a meeting, and a twelve-step room, and leave it there. Nothing in this story needs the name.
So. Back row. Somebody else stood up and started talking.
It was not the story that got me. It was the sentences
People imagine recognition as plot. You hear a stranger describe an event that also happened to you, and you go, that happened to me too. That is not what happened, and it would not have moved me if it had. Our facts were nothing alike.
What matched was smaller and much worse. It was the phrasing. The self-talk. The exact justification, in the exact order, with the exact same clause on the end to make it land softer. The little internal argument I had assumed was mine, generated by my particular head about my particular situation, was coming out of somebody else’s mouth almost word for word.
They sounded exactly like me.
And that is the horror of it. Not being seen. Being generic.
I had spent years believing my situation was specific. My judgement, my markets, my run, my reasons. Specificity was the thing holding the whole structure up, because a specific problem has a specific fix and just needs more time. What that room did in about four minutes was take the specificity away, and once it was gone the structure had nothing standing under it.
The word
Renovyn does not use the word addict about anybody. Not in the app, not in an email, not on this site. People are in recovery. I believe that with the whole company, and I am not going to soften it now.
But the word in my head that night was not the careful one, and rewriting it here would be a lie about the only moment in this series that actually matters.
I am an addict.
That was the sentence. It arrived while somebody else was still talking, and it did not feel like a decision or an admission. It felt like a fact I had walked past a thousand times finally being read out loud in a room where it was allowed to be true.
I have not used the word about myself since, and I would not use it about you. But that night it was the only word with enough weight to stop me.
I had already decided I was past saving
This part I have to say carefully, because it is the bit that will land for somebody reading this at the wrong hour.
Before that room, I had quietly concluded that I had gone too far to come back. Not dramatically. There was no scene. It was more like a settled position I had stopped arguing with, the way you stop arguing with your own height. Some people can be helped. That window had closed for me, so the reasonable thing to do was carry on and stop wasting anyone’s time with the idea of a way out.
Nobody in that room addressed me. Nobody knew my name. What ended that position was much stupider and much stronger than an argument, which is that the person saying my sentences back to me was standing up, still there, still talking, and very obviously not past saving.
If they were not past saving, my whole position collapsed, because we were the same case.
That is what a room does that nobody in my life could have done for me. If someone who loved me had sat me down and said any of this, I would have argued, and I would have won, because I was better at arguing about my own life than they were and I had all the specifics. A stranger with no stake in whether I agreed, talking about themselves, gave me nothing to argue with.
What I would say to the version of me in the back row
Not much. He was not ready to be talked at, and everybody who tried had learned that.
I would say: you do not have to agree with anything tonight. Just notice which sentences are yours. Not the events. Not the amounts. The sentences. If the way a stranger explains themselves to themselves is the way you explain yourself to yourself, that is information, and it is the first honest information you have had about this in years.
Then I would tell him what came next, because he would not have believed it. I did not get better in a straight line from there. I relapsed, and the relapse is three years behind me now, and it did not put me back at the start. That is the last piece.
We've got you
Take the next quiet step.
Renovyn is the app we wished existed in our worst weeks. Check-ins, protection, community, and a crisis button for 3am. Or if you just want the next piece in your inbox, we can do that too.
