# You placed a bet. What now? > Close the session, protect what money is left, tell one person, and do not chase. NICE's own guidance says relapse does not indicate individual failure. Published: 10 September 2026 Read time: 6 min Section: Gambling Topics: gambled again, gambling relapse, i broke my gambling streak, stop chasing losses URL: https://renovyn.io/guides/you-placed-a-bet-what-now --- Close the app and put the phone in another room. Move or hand over whatever money is still reachable. Tell one person tonight, even by text. Do not place a second bet to correct the first, because that is the move that turns a bad hour into a bad month. The streak is broken. The recovery is not. ## The next bet is the danger, not the last one Whatever you have just lost, it is a fixed number. It stops being fixed the moment you try to win it back. Chasing is written into the diagnosis. One of the nine DSM-5 criteria for gambling disorder is that after losing money, a person "often returns another day to get even ('chasing' one's losses)". So the thought you are having right now is the single most predictable thought in the whole condition, and it is not evidence about you. It also lies about the maths. A chase presents the next stake as recovery rather than as an additional loss, which is why people who manage budgets competently at work will put the rent on at midnight. [The mechanism is worth understanding properly](/guides/gambling/loss-chasing-and-the-near-miss), though not tonight. ## The next hour, in order 1. **End the session.** Close the app, log out, shut the laptop, walk out of the shop. Do not check the result of anything still running. 2. **Put the phone somewhere else.** Another room, or with somebody. This is the one that does most of the work. 3. **Protect the money that is left.** Move it to an account you cannot reach easily, or hand the card to whoever is in the house. NICE's guidance for clinicians lists "methods to limit access to money, for example, agreeing that a family member will take control of finances" as a practical measure, and tonight is exactly what it is for. 4. **Tell one person.** A text is enough. "I gambled tonight and I'm telling you so it doesn't stay secret." You are not asking them to fix it. You are ending the concealment, which is the part that lets the next one happen quietly. 5. **Check the blocks and fix the hole.** Something let this through. Work out what and close it, tonight if it takes ten minutes. 6. **Go to bed.** Nothing good is decided after this point. The debt conversation, the budget, the plan, all of it is a tomorrow job. ## Find the actual hole A bet that got through means a specific gap, and it is usually one of five. - **No Gamstop registration, or one that missed you.** Gamstop blocks gambling websites and apps licensed in Great Britain, and it matches you on the details you gave it. If you signed up somewhere with an old email address or an old phone number, add those details now. - **An unlicensed site, a crypto casino or a prediction market.** These sit outside Gamstop entirely because they are not licensed by the Gambling Commission. What still helps is the bank block, blocking software on the device, and somebody else holding the card. - **A payment route your bank block does not see.** Card blocks read the merchant category code on a payment. Money moved into an e-wallet first does not carry one, so the second half of the journey is invisible to the block. - **A shop.** The online schemes do nothing about the high street. Gamstop Betting Shops is a separate telephone scheme on 0800 294 2060, running for twelve months, covering bookmakers rather than casinos, bingo halls or arcades. - **A device you never covered.** The old handset, the work laptop, the tablet in the kitchen drawer. [The full stack and the gap each layer leaves is set out here](/guides/gambling/gamstop-bank-blocks-and-blocking-apps). Fix one hole tonight. The rest can wait until the weekend. ## What this does and does not mean It does not mean the last three weeks were wasted. Time not gambling is not refunded by a bad Tuesday, and the blocks you set are still on. NICE, which writes NHS clinical guidance on this, tells services to treat relapse as something that "is not shameful and it may be part of a recovery journey or learning event", and states plainly that "relapse does not indicate individual failure". That is a national clinical guideline, not a comforting line from a recovery forum. What it does mean is that something in the setup was not strong enough for a particular hour, and now you know which hour. That information is worth more than the three weeks were. [Turning it into a map takes half an hour](/guides/gambling/your-gambling-triggers-and-danger-zones). ## The shame is the second risk There is the money, and then there is what happens in your head afterwards, and the second one causes more damage over a week. The reasoning goes: I have ruined it, so tonight is already lost, so I may as well. That is how one bet becomes a weekend and a weekend becomes a month. It is not weakness, it is a very ordinary bit of arithmetic that happens to be wrong. There is no ruined-it threshold. There is only the next hour, which is still available. Say the number out loud to somebody within twenty four hours. Shame does not survive contact with a person who does not run away, and the conversation is easier than you think. [Here is how to have it, with the figures written down first](/guides/gambling/telling-someone-about-the-money). ## If tonight is worse than a bad bet Read this even if you think it does not apply. NICE tells clinicians to "recognise that gambling and gambling-related harms can be a dominant risk factor for suicidal ideation and suicide attempts, even in the absence of other risk factors", and that the risk "may be highest immediately after a gambling episode". Immediately after. That is now. Samaritans is **116 123**, free, any hour. In immediate danger, **999**. The National Gambling Helpline is 0808 8020 133, 24 hours a day, and they take this call constantly. ## Tomorrow Three things, in this order. Close the second hole in the blocking stack. Ring StepChange on 0800 138 1111 if money is now the emergency, because free advice beats a consolidation loan every time. Then put something in the hour this happened in, so next week that hour is occupied. Some people find it easier to keep the blocks, the hours and the person they message in one place, which is what [Renovyn's Shield](/shield) is for. Friction, plus somebody in the loop. It is not treatment and it is not debt advice. ## Common questions **I gambled after two months clean. Have I lost my progress?** No. NICE's guidance is explicit that relapse does not indicate individual failure and may be part of a recovery journey. Two months of not gambling happened, and it is not undone by one night. What matters is whether tonight ends here or turns into a fortnight. **Should I try to win it back?** No, and the urge to is a diagnostic criterion rather than a plan. Returning another day to get even is one of the nine criteria for gambling disorder. Whatever has gone is a fixed amount right now, and it stops being fixed the second you chase it. **How do I stop myself gambling again tonight?** Phone in another room, money out of reach or handed over, one person told, and close whichever gap let the bet through. Twenty minutes of distance does more than an hour of arguing with yourself. **Should I tell my partner straight away?** Tell somebody tonight, and it does not have to be them. If it is going to be them, have the real total written down first so the conversation happens once rather than in instalments over three weeks. ## Sources - [NICE NG248, Harmful gambling recommendations](https://www.nice.org.uk/guidance/ng248/chapter/recommendations).
